The 2022-23 campaign for the Edward Waters women’s basketball squad opened on Tuesday night in an exhibition against Bethune-Cookman at Historic Moore Gymnasium. A rough third quarter that saw the Lady Tigers get outscored 21-11, proved to be the sore spot in a 72-56 loss to the Lady Wildcats.
The first quarter saw Edward Waters come out of the blocks slowly with Bethune-Cookman scoring the first seven points of the game before the Lady Tigers could get going. EWU was able to close the quarter out strong drawing to within two points of the lead at 17-15. Quarter #2 was much more of the same with Edward Waters coming close to taking the lead, but BCU keeping slight distance from the Lady Tigers. The Lady Wildcats ended up taking a 31-25 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
The third quarter was not the Lady Tigers’ friend however. BCU saw their lead grow to double digits with four minutes remaining in the quarter and they were able to ride that moment out to the exhibition victory.
For the game, BCU outshot Edward Waters 37.3% to 31.0% from the floor. Edward Waters did have the better of the chances from behind the arc, hitting 31% of their three’s while BCU was shut out, going 0-11. The night belonged to former BCU and MEAC All-Rookie Team member Tatum Hayes, who shined in her debut for Edward Waters. Hayes finished with a game high 20 points on 7-of-22 shooting, including connecting on five three pointers. Junior college transfer guard Isis Smith also had a solid debut, finishing in double figures with 12 points and six rebounds, while fellow JUCO transfer Anissa Tuitt wrapped up her night with 11 points and five boards off of the Lady Tiger bench.
Edward Waters will officially open their 2022-23 season on Monday, November 14th for their annual “Make It A Kid’s Day” contest as they will welcome several elementary and middle school students from around Northeast Florida to witness college basketball. EWU will host the University of Fort Lauderdale with tipoff set for 11:00am at the Adams-Jenkins Community Sports & Music Complex.
