PHSC Offers New AMT Apprenticeship Program

Phsc

Pasco-Hernando State College issued the following announcement on Aug. 17.

PHSC offers a new apartment maintenance technician apprenticeship program for fall 2021 - Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) is increasing opportunities for students seeking a non-traditional college experience and looking to pursue a certification in the workforce. PHSC, through the Workforce Education department and in partnership with Bay Area Apartment Association (BAAA), is offering an Apartment Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Program for fall semester, and is actively recruiting for future Apartment Maintenance Technicians (AMT). PHSC’s apprenticeship program is registered by the state of Florida for veterans training under the GI Bill. This program is designed for varying groups of individuals, including those leaving the military, graduating high school or college, or switching careers due to COVID-19.

This new program, with classes beginning August 30, 2021, prepares students for the increasing need for service technicians in a rapidly growing rental housing industry. The 12-month program includes online and face-to-face instruction, as well as paid on-the-job training, delivered by instructors in the field. Students will complete 168 hours of classroom instruction and 2,000 paid on-the-job training hours over the course of the year.

Through the AMT Apprenticeship Program, apprentices will be placed with a leading property management company where they will receive paid on-the-job training, as well as classroom and hands-on training over the course of the year. The apprentices will obtain skills in:

Electrical

Cabinetry

HVAC diagnosis and repair

Punch Skills

Basic Plumbing

Appliance Repair

Exterior Maintenance and more

After the apprenticeship, the new maintenance technicians will have skills that are marketable nationwide and job placement with a leading property management company as a full-time service technician.

“We are excited to partner with Bay Area Apartment Association on this Apprenticeship Program to benefit our students and the communities we serve,” says PHSC President Timothy Beard, Ph.D. “Preparing our students to respond to the demand for skilled maintenance technicians is crucial to growing strong communities and the economy.”

PHSC will continue to deliver exceptional instructional offerings on campus (for certain programs and courses) and virtually (through online/hybrid/remote learning) while maintaining safety procedures recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Florida Department of Health (FLDOH).
