City of Brooksville issued the following announcement on Oct. 5.
On October 4, 2021, during a regular Council Meeting, the Brooksville City Council proclaimed October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For nearly four decades the country
has recognized October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is a time annually devoted to educating everyone about breast cancer and the importance of early
detection. Breast cancer is one of the leading health crises for women in the United States. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. There is
currently no known cure for breast cancer, and its early diagnosis is critical to survival. In addition, breast cancer is the second most commonly occurring cancer and mammograms
play a vital role in detecting cancer as early as possible. Breast cancer occurs as a result of mutations or abnormal changes in the genes responsible for regulating the growth of
cells and keeping them healthy. There are steps every person can take to help the body stay healthy such as eating a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting, alcohol
and early detection. The detection of a lump in the breast can be alarming for most women and their families; however, if breast cancer can be detected early, still in the localized
stage, the five-year survival rate is 99%. Early detection can help change the course of the disease and give the woman a greater fighting chance, with a better outcome. Negative
screening can result in greater peace of mind. The City Council encourages the citizens to join in this observance and stand strong for those facing the diagnosis of breast cancer,
thank those that have helped to contribute to a cure for this terrible disease and pause for a moment to remember those who have succumbed to breast cancer. PRESS
In addition, the City Council invites everyone to attend the annual Brooksville Breast Cancer Awareness Walk with the Mayor, that will take place on Saturday, October 9, 2021. The
walk starts at 10:00 a.m. at Tom Varn Park located at 306 Darby Lane, Brooksville. Join us on the park trail, looping through the beautiful canopy of trees and ending at the Tree of
Hope, where supporters can hang words of encouragement and hope, in honor of Breast Cancer survivors, loved ones currently fighting and those taken by the disease. For more
