City of Brooksville to hold 2nd Annual Veterans Day Event

5

City of Brooksville issued the following announcement on Nov. 2.

On November 1, 2021, during a regular Council Meeting, the Brooksville City Council proclaimed Thursday, November 11, 2021, as Veterans Day. Veterans day provides an annual

opportunity to honor the American Patriots who answered the call of duty to protect our nation and preserve our freedoms. The Brooksville City Council recognizes and respects

the many veterans in our community for their many and often untold sacrifices and contributions to our freedom and security. Veterans Day was first established in 1919 by

President Woodrow Wilson. At this time, it was called Armistice Day and was created to remember “the heroism of those who died in the country’s service.” Congress passed a

resolution on June 4, 1928, calling for the observance of

November 11 with appropriate ceremonies, and later provided in an act approved May 13, 1938, that the eleventh of November should be a legal holiday and should be known as

Armistice Day. President Dwight D. Eisenhower wanted to expand the significance of that commemoration and in order that a grateful nation might pay appropriate homage to the

veterans of all its wars who have contributed so much to the preservation of this Nation, the Congress, by an act approved June

1, 1954 (68 Stat. 168), changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day. The City Council encourages the citizens to join in this observance and proudly joins the rest of our nation

to salute and give special honor and recognition to the men and women who have served and continue to serve us in our armed forces. In conjunction with the observance of

Veterans Day, the Brooksville City Council would like to invite the public to join us in recognizing and showing respect to the many veterans, within our own community, at the City’s

2nd Annual Veterans Day event. The event will take place on November 11, 2021, 10:00 AM, at the Jerome Brown Community Center located in Tom Varn Park, 99 Jerome Brown

Place, Brooksville. For more information about the proclamation, please contact Jennifer Battista, City Clerk (352) 540-3810 or jbattista@cityofbrooksville.us. For more information

on the Veterans Day event contact the City of Brooksville Parks & Recreation Department at (352) 540-3830.
