After being off of the floor for over a week and having three games either postponed or cancelled due to Hurricane Ian, the EWU women's volleyball squad returned to the floor on Wednesday afternoon for a non-conference road matchup against Emmanuel. EWU put up a valiant effort against the homestanding Lions but, the affects of rust due to the long layoff loomed large as Emmanuel swept the Lady Tigers in three sets (16-25, 18-25, 15-25) at the Shaw Athletic Center. The loss for Edward Waters snapped a three-game winning streak that they carried into the match.
EWU (13-7, 7-1 SIAC) could not get a full handle on the heavy hitting Lions (13-7, 7-1 Conference Carolinas) as EC hit a robust .460 in the match compared to .237 for the Lady Tigers.
The Purple & Orange were led by Naomy Vergez Varona with 11 kills, two aces, one block, and six digs. Saldy Amparo Smith and Fatima Ramirez chipped in with eight kills for EWU as well. Mataiya Barber had 25 assists while Andrea Diaz Merced had a match high 13 digs on the afternoon.
It will be a quick turnaround for Edward Waters as they put their 12 match home winning streak on the line as they will host Benedict in an SIAC East Division matchup. First serve is set for 4:00pm at the Adams-Jenkins Community Sports & Music Complex.
