For the first time in seven years, Edward Waters University was able to sign a recruit for the rebirthed women’s golf program with the signing of state champion golfer Leiahnni Smith from Lima Central Catholic High School in Lima, Ohio.

Smith is a member of the 2021 Ohio High School Athletic Association Division 2 Girls Golf State Championship team at LCCHS, where she helped lead the Thunderbirds to their fourth consecutive state championship.

The championship was also a historic individual achievement for Smith as she became the first African American State High School Golf Champion in Lima/Allen County, Ohio. Additionally, Smith became only the second African American High School State Golf Champion in the State of Ohio.

The new Edward Waters Women’s Golf program was reborn back in 2021, thanks to a $50,000 gift from THE PLAYERS Championship. The Lady Tigers will take to the links for the first time since 2015 in the 2022-2023 athletics year.
