Hernando County issued the following announcement on Aug. 9.
The Hernando County Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ (FFL) program offers classes and workshops year-round to help residents learn how to save time, money and water when maintaining their lawns and gardens. Residents are invited to participate in free, online learning through virtual, interactive classes for the month of August. These virtual classes and in-person workshop will be presented by Florida-Friendly Landscaping Coordinator Lilly Browning.
The schedule of classes along with a short description of each is listed below. Residents can participate by clicking the Zoom meeting link associated with the class they wish to attend at the time it is offered and entering in the meeting ID and passcode. Videos will be available on the Florida-Friendly Landscaping Facebook and the Hernando County Government YouTube Channel after the class has been recorded.
Free Virtual Class: Reduce Tiny Gardens, Big Impact
Residents are invited to virtually attend “Tiny Gardens, Big Impact” on Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at 10 a.m. Small spaces can have a big impact on our ecosystem. Learn how to attract pollinators and bring beauty and function to your cozy space using Florida-Friendly principles.

Just Rain Barrels
An in-person, outdoor Rain Barrel Workshop will be offered at Chinsegut Conservation Center, located at 23212 Lake Lindsey Road in Brooksville, on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at 9 a.m. This workshop is for rain barrels only. Compost bins will not be available.
Rain barrels are $50. A one-time water bill credit of $25 is available for customers of Hernando County Utilities for attending a workshop, purchasing a rain barrel and installing it at their home. Interested persons MUST email LillyB@HernandoCounty.us by August 17, 2021 to receive more information and complete the registration process. Class size is limited.
Free Virtual Workshop: Rain Barrel and Compost Bin Workshop
Residents are invited to virtually attend a Rain Barrel and Compost Bin Workshop on Thursday, August 19, 2021 at 6 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. If you are interested in attending a Rain Barrel and/or a Compost Bin Workshop, please email LillyB@HernandoCounty.us to register by August 17, 2021. Registration is required as class size is limited. Rain barrels are $50. A one-time water bill credit of $25 is available for customers of Hernando County Utilities for attending a workshop and taking a rain barrel home. To receive a free compost bin, you must be a resident of Hernando County. One bin per household. Rain barrel and compost bin pick up will be Friday, August 20, 2021 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Hernando County Utilities Department located at 15365 Cortez Boulevard in Brooksville.
Free Virtual Class: Trees! Marvelous Trees!
Residents are invited to virtually attend “Trees! Marvelous Trees!” on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at 10 a.m. In this class, we will discuss the trees of Central Florida, how to choose the best ones for your landscape and how to care for the trees you already have.
